Hi, friends! I just wanted to take a quick moment to give you a little insight into what KXRT and the Timmy LIVE! Show are all about. If you’ve known me much at all, you’d know that I have a lot of interest and desire to work in radio. I got the bug way early in my childhood when listening to the DJs spin the hits in the 80’s up in Washington. It was something I wanted to do and as soon as my dad bought me my first dual-deck portable stereo (read: boombox), I was creating my own radio station in my bedroom! As I grew and my interests developed and my ability to drive around improved, I found a small AM radio station nearby. I started hanging out with the DJs there. I started to really see how radio worked. I hung around enough and actually got on the payroll. I started by recording commercials from reel-to-reel tape to their tape cartridges to play on-air. Then I was able to provide fill-in and some basic operating roles. I ran the board for local high school sports games. I was so excited. Then I ended up getting into some trouble as I got caught being on the air after-hours and was let go.

As time went on I was a DJ for church dances for a few years then I got married and reality set in and got a job in IT doing tech support. I never lost my dreams of being on the radio. I looked for every opportunity to get into a station somehow. I knew about internet radio for a little while and was able to arrange a way to have my own station. It went through many changes and evolutions as we moved from WA to CA and finally, to UT. I found I could do a much better job in my current home as the internet service here is incredibly fast and reasonable. Thus, we have KXRT. The call letters do not mean anything. They are just a good sounding combination of letters. I have a spare computer that is running all the software, music and servers to make KXRT run. I have a webpage setup to provide station information and links to listen, it’s http://kxrt.wordpress.com. I also started a Facebook Fan Page: http://facebook.com/KXRTOnline.

I try to mimic what a typical FM music radio station would sound like with a couple exceptions. I don’t play any commercials and there are much fewer interruptions. With FM radio, people scan the dial and can land on a station and not know much else than the number on the dial, like 104.3. So a typical station has to keep identifying itself with jingles and spoken promotions. When you listen to an internet station, you know where you are. You picked it and hit play. I only ID the station every 15 minutes. I also try to keep the music selection fresh and interesting. I’m constantly making adjustments to the playlist and the music selections to keep things from getting stale or tired. I just try to make KXRT a station you can really listen to all day and be entertained. I know it’s a difficult job to make sure you like every song. Most likely, it’s impossible. That’s why I try to mix things up. Country, Rock, Pop, R&B, Alternative – stuff from the 70’s through today. I even added in some Elvis to spice things up a bit!

The Timmy LIVE! Show is the one exception to my goal of having fewer interruptions. It’s a semi-regular feature that has me as the FM music radio-style DJ. I announce songs, take listener calls from 801-788-4916, have a featured artist or group, and have a Top 5 countdown. For two hours, I have my dream job! Entertaining you. I try to plan these shows to happen a couple times a month on Saturday nights. I give plenty of notice to help you set an appointment to be there for the show.

This is a big part of who I am. I take a lot of enjoyment knowing I’m entertaining people. I hope this post has helped you understand my countless posts on Facebook and otherwise about KXRT this and Timmy LIVE! that. It’s me, expressing myself and having a complete blast! If you have any questions, post them here, or ask me.

Thanks for your time!

-Timmy

Movie Reviews: A few we recently watched

2010 January 26

Nights In Rodanthe was a pretty lame movie. With Diane Lane and Richard Gere, you would think it would be pretty good. Having never read the book by Nicholas Sparks, I wasn’t tainted by that typical “the movie’s never good as the book” stigma. I still felt like the movie clipped along too quickly leaving behind a lot of story and, more importantly, character development. I never felt like they fell in love. The emotion wasn’t there. 2 open squiggly brackets out of 5: {{ .

Ghost Rider, starring Nicolas Cage and Eva Mendes was a fun movie to watch but really delved into the darkness of evil. The story was about a boy who made a deal with the Devil to have his dad’s cancer cured in exchange for his soul and to become ol’ Scratch’s bounty hunter. Sure enough, his dad was healed as promised and that same day, died in a motorcycle stunt accident. The story continues when it’s time to play his part to hunt down the beast’s son and kill him. Nicolas Cage’s head turns into a flaming skull and his bike looks like something from an 80’s heavy metal music video. He is successful and when Mephistopheles offers Cage his soul back and to remove the curse of being the Rider, he refuses and vows to use this curse against daddy evil forever more. Effects are cool, story is typical, Eva is hot and Nick gets to use his dramatic finger-point move he likes so much. 4 out of 5: {{{{.

Sherlock Holmes is a fantastic movie! Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law play the detective and his faithful pal, Watson, respectively. Following Sherlock on a case to stop a supposedly demonic killer from taking over the world (really, why not?), he uses his incredible sly wit and intuition to piece together an incredible case. Some of my favorite parts in the film are when he thinks his future moves and narrates them. In one fight scene, he’s about to walk away and gets spit upon. He plans out his four or five “moves” to basically take out his opponent in slow motion. Then he proceeds to do it as described in real-time. It’s hard to describe but you have to see it to appreciate it. Also in the movie is cutey Rachel McAdams as the conflict/love/monkey wrench character. She has her own mission and agenda but tries to distract Holmes from his job. The movie is excellent and was worth the three times I watched it in the theaters. 5 out of 5: {{{{{

Avatar is a visually stunning feature! James Cameron, after waiting many years for technology to catch up to his vision, crafted this dizzying display of outstanding effects and virtual worlds and fantastic concepts. Yes, there’s a message about big corporations encroaching on the small of the market just because they can. The concept here is that on the planet Pandora (product placement??), there are these humanoid creatures that are larger and bluer than your typical Earthling. Folks from Earth are in their world trying to mine a ore that is rare and worth lotsa money. In order to seek agreements with them, folks from Earth crawl into these pods that put them in control of these alien creatures that were manufactured to look just like the native beings. Thus, avatars. On Twitter or Facebook, our profile pics are considered avatars, to represent who we are. As it goes one of the guys who is running an avatar, while trying to learn their ways and become accepted into their society, falls in love with one of them. This creates a conflict of interest as he becomes sympathetic to their plight. There’s a lot to explain. My opinion? Go see it while it’s still at the theaters! It will blow your mind! 4 out of 5: {{{{

Time Flies…

2010 January 12

Here it is almost dead-center of January! It’s like the time has no consideration for anything. You’d think at the beginning of a new year, time would slow down a bit to allow us a little time to reflect and savor the feeling. BUT NO!! Time just floats by same as always, relentless. Just like you’d hope time around a holiday or a birthday or some big event or trip, you’d wish time would relax just a bit. Of course, it does not and we have to run sometimes to keep up.

Days, months and years just tick by like clouds in the sky, like songs on the radio, like the second-hand swipes by on a clock…

Interesting to consider that depending on what’s going on time can really feel like it’s just rocketing past you or slower than the snow and rain erodes a mountain side. I found that most times when time goes too fast is looking back on things. When I served my two-year full-time LDS Mission in Florida I look back at that time as it was just a brief instant. While I was in Florida, there were times that I would just explode waiting for the next hour to go by. I still feel that way at times at work or the dentist! read more…
